Much of The Villages lies in Sumter County, where town squares, recreation centers and a vast network of golf-cart routes have turned retirement into a form of urban planning.
The Villages is the county's dominant population center, though it is an unincorporated community that also extends into Lake and Marion counties. Wildwood has grown rapidly at the junction of Interstate 75 and Florida's Turnpike. Bushnell is the county seat and retains a small courthouse-town scale. Coleman, Webster and Center Hill are smaller municipalities with agricultural and railroad histories. Lake Panasoffkee is a well-known fishing community, while Oxford and Sumterville are changing as development moves south and west from The Villages.
The contrast produces an unusually varied land-record landscape.
