Hendry County once gave young British pilots a very sunny introduction to wartime flying. During World War II, Riddle Field near Clewiston trained Royal Air Force cadets far from the weather and danger over Europe. The location offered room to fly and a great many clear days. Today the story adds an unexpected accent to a county better known for sugarcane, cattle, wetlands and the broad southern shore of Lake Okeechobee.
Clewiston calls itself America's Sweetest Town, a nod to the sugar industry that has long shaped the eastern side of the county. LaBelle, the county seat, sits west along the Caloosahatchee River and serves as a gateway between the lake country and the Gulf Coast. Port LaBelle has grown around the LaBelle area, while Harlem, Felda, Pioneer Plantation and Montura add distinct communities and rural neighborhoods. The landscape changes quickly from riverfront streets to cane fields, groves, ranches and open wetland.
Hendry County land can therefore come with very different descriptions. A house in LaBelle may be a platted lot. A Clewiston property may involve an older subdivision. Larger tracts may be described by section, township and range, and a parcel near canals or agricultural land can have easements that deserve careful attention. People prepare deeds here after purchases, gifts, trust transfers, family changes and corrections. The deed must match the ownership goal and accurately describe the Hendry County land.
After execution, the document is presented to the Hendry County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller, who serves as county recorder. Official Records is located in the county administration building in LaBelle. The office accepts documents in person and by mail, and the clerk publishes electronic-recording options for approved submitters. Recording places the deed in the public record so later owners, lenders and title professionals can follow the chain of title. It does not replace the need to choose the right form or prepare the legal description correctly.
The usual recording charge for a standard-size instrument is $10 for the first page and $8.50 for each additional page. An indexing fee of $1 generally applies for every name over four. Deeds may also require documentary stamp tax, usually calculated at $0.70 per $100 of consideration outside Miami-Dade County. The exact total depends on the transaction, and the current clerk guidance should be consulted before a document is mailed or delivered.
The Hendry County Property Appraiser maintains parcel, ownership and assessment information. That site is helpful for confirming the parcel involved, but the recorded deed is the place to retrieve and review the legal description. A parcel identification number is useful to the recording office, yet it does not stand in for the words that legally describe the land.
From a Clewiston home near the lake to acreage outside Felda, the last step for a properly executed deed is the same: record it in Hendry County. Riddle Field's cadets had checklists before takeoff. A deed benefits from the same unromantic habit, especially when signatures, witnesses, tax and return information all need to arrive together.
