Glades County Deed & Recording Guide

Lake Okeechobee, Ranch Country and Ancient Canals

Places, character and the practical path to the county's Official Records.

Lake Okeechobee at Moore Haven with ranch country beyond

Long before modern drainage canals crossed south Florida, people living near present-day Ortona engineered canals of their own. Archaeological research at the Ortona mound complex in Glades County has identified earthworks and canoe canals dating back many centuries. The features are reminders that this inland landscape was not an empty wilderness. It was traveled, organized and reshaped by communities with sophisticated knowledge of water and terrain.

Moore Haven, the county seat, sits where the Caloosahatchee leaves Lake Okeechobee and begins its westward journey. The city grew around water control, farming and navigation. Buckhead Ridge lies along the lake's northwestern shore, while Lakeport faces the lake farther south. Palmdale is on U.S. 27 near Fisheating Creek. The Brighton Seminole Reservation occupies a substantial area in the county's north and has its own government, agriculture and cultural life. Much of the remaining landscape is ranchland, wetlands and scattered rural homes.

Glades County has a small population spread across a large area, and water levels remain central to daily life. The Herbert Hoover Dike, canals and control structures frame Lake Okeechobee. Fisheating Creek preserves a winding natural corridor through floodplain forest and prairie. Cattle and agriculture remain visible away from the lake. The county's quiet roads can make parcels feel remote, which raises practical questions about legal access, road maintenance and the exact location of boundaries.

A deed here might concern a Moore Haven lot, a Buckhead Ridge home, ranch acreage or land along a canal. It may follow a sale, gift, estate plan, trust transfer, family change or correction. Rural legal descriptions are often more complex than a street address suggests. Some use section, township and range calls, and some refer back to earlier deeds. Flood maps and appraiser maps are useful research tools, but they do not replace the legal description in the recorded instrument.

The Glades County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller records deeds, mortgages, liens, plats and other authorized documents in the Official Records. The clerk's office is in Room 102 at 500 Avenue J in Moore Haven, with mail directed to Post Office Box 10. The county offers an online Official Records search, including a separate route for records from 1988 and earlier, plus electronic-recording service. Documents may also be delivered in person or mailed under the clerk's current instructions.

The standard statewide recording charge is generally $10 for the first page and $8.50 for each additional page of a standard-size instrument. More than four indexed names usually adds $1 per extra name. Documentary stamp tax may be due on a deed. Glades County provides an online deed-fee calculator, a better option than estimating from a similar transaction elsewhere.

The Glades County Property Appraiser's site helps identify parcels, owners and assessments. The clerk's records show the deeds themselves. Ancient Ortona engineers understood that a canal must connect the right places. A modern deed has a similar demand for accuracy: the right parties, the right land and the right recording office in Moore Haven.

Deed requirements for Glades County
